Tips of the Trade:

The Heartbreak of Efflorescence

There it is. The dreaded, chalky, white stuff. You know it’s there and you try to ignore it, but it only gets worst.

There is a unique environment and you need paint that addresses that uniqueness.

Efflorescence is one of the top three paint related problems in Bermuda. Because of the salts in the stone, sand and water common to Bermuda construction, you can get that unsightly white frosting after applying paint. Bermuda Paint products are formulated to have maximum efflorescence resistance.

Here are the methods to avoid, or cure, efflorescence.

  • Allow 30-60 days curing time for new masonry
  • Locate and eliminate the source of excess moisture. If it’s on the inside and vice versa
  • Repair any roof damage, clean down spouts, seal any high quality water-based acrylic or siliconised acrylic caulk like White Lightning.
  • Always properly prepare the surface before painting. Power wash or brush off any efflorescence, and clean with 3-1 muriatic acid solution. Wait 2 hours and wash with clear water. Allow to dry completely.
  • Interiors, especially for white and light colours with water based Acri-Seal.

New or problem masonry should be sealed with solvet based Maxi-Prime, an alkaline resistant rubberized primer. Allow to dry completely. Paint with top quality Bermuda Paint: ACR acrylic latex, Decra Tone or environmentally friendly Decratone 2000 for interiors, and ACR acrylic latex, long-lasting Weather Master, or Acri-lux (acrylic semi-gloss) for exterior masonry walls.

Nearly all paint failure has to do with inadequately prepared work surfaces. Effective painting has a lot to do with a little patience and using the highest quality products. Products made for the job at hand. Bermuda Paint Products.
